Adult KarateImagine a safe, high-energy activity with limitless learning and enjoyment that can be enjoyed and practiced throughout your lifetime in various forms, from the traditional health promoting to the practical applications for self-defense to the competitive sport, and you are imagining Karate classes for adults at the Toronto's York AMA. Our unique program consists of instruction in Okinawan Karate, Goshin Jitsu (self-defense) and ancient weapons taught in a traditional ‘Dojo’ environment where mutual courtesy and respect are the rule.

Karate training involves cardio vascular exercise for stamina, resistance training for strength, and stretching exercises for flexibility, none of which you need to have before starting in our beginners classes. Beginners can train in their own class on Mondays and Wednesdays as well as in the open classes on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

There are at least as many benefits for the mind as there are for the body as your training helps you to get the stress out, regain your composure and improve your confidence, concentration and patience Whether you are 20 something looking for some great martial arts training, a 30 something looking for something more interesting than the gym, or a 40 something looking to be ‘Fit for Fifty’ and beyond, our program can help you get there. At its heart Karate is a defensive martial art that teaches practitioners various ways and means of using their body parts to protect themselves. Its philosophy dictates the need to use discipline, awareness and preparation as primary forms of protection, understanding that the best defense lies in not being caught in a bad situation. At the same time there is a clear acceptance of the need to be fully physically and mentally prepared for any eventuality.

Here at the AMA our program of Karate training includes and incorporates another very important aspect of Karate: Goshin Jitsu (Self Defense). Using specific techniques, tactics and strategies students learn to deal with various forms of assault from grappling, throwing and ground fighting to punching and kicking.

As well as incorporating this training in our regularly scheduled classes, throughout the year we offer courses on self defense both in house, at local high schools in the TDSB or TCDSB, as well as in workplace environments through our Workplace Warrior Programs corporate training courses. The Tai Chi/ Yoga fusion program at the York Academy of Martial Arts is a great low impact way for adults to meet their individual training goals. The emphasis of this program is on relaxation, stress management, developing flexibility, gaining balance both externally and internally and improving fitness. In addition, students will learn the fundamental applications of the movements performed during Tai Chi practice and push hands drills, which may help them to apply these movements for self-defense purposes.

The internal arts program uses Chi Kung (breathing and movement exercises) and yoga style stretching and limbering exercises to improve circulation, range of motion, muscular fitness and to promote relaxation. The majority of practice is dedicated to the study of Tai Chi Chuan which is an ancient form of Chinese Martial arts focusing on the practice of slow controlled movements, proper breath and movement coordination and the attitude of yielding to rather then resisting against the forces which affect us.

Students who practice with us regularly report a greater sense of peace and relaxation as they go through their daily activities. They also indicate that they are healthier, more positive and energetic since they have better perspective and control over the situations that they encounter. If you are ready to get back into or stay in shape and learn an interesting and enriching form of activity, then use the contact us form to find out how you can come in to try us out for FREE!
